In many cases it is inevitable that one begins to listen to a disc and after the third song begins to feel anxious to discover something that surprises you, that forces you to stay to listen to the last song and that moment does not arrive. Other times, impatient, we begin to go from song to song quickly because at the beginning of each of them you know what's coming, guess and think: "I've heard that before" or "boring". We spend months or perhaps years waiting for that record that moves our soul and that is an essential part of our life forever. And the disc does not arrive. I confess that when I decided to listen to the Shawn Mendes album that simply bears his name and that was released in 2018, I had my finger ready to change the track as long as ten seconds of each song passed ... but my finger stayed frozen, paralyzed, this time I did not use it !!! From the first track of the album, "In My Blood", I was hooked to it and I listened to it without stopping until the end. Probably "In My Blood" would have been a good name for the album, but when an artist is so sure of what he just produced he does not find the need to put names that attract attention, he does not need it and that's why I think he decided that the album simply bears the name of its author: Shawn Mendes. I must say with extraordinary surprise and frankness that the album moved me, it does not have waste and you can listen to it from beginning to end without feeling that time passes while you travel all the places where it takes you. Amazing, I still can not believe it. In his two previous albums, Shawn Mendes had already shown signs of being a brilliant composer, but I think he had not achieved such a complete work in every way and, had only made it clear that he had great sensitivity but that he was in the process of growing up and mature like every young composer. But in "In My Blood", the Canadian musician, singer and composer has made it clear that the previous successes were not chance and is ready to compete with anyone for the love and preference of the general public. The album takes us through genres such as rock, romantic ballad, pop and, R & B, with a soft and pleasant accent for all kinds of tastes. It is his very particular stamp and it satisfies everyone.
It is obvious that in several issues you can see a Shawn worried about speaking directly to his base of followers, mainly girls, which is understandable due to the commercial aspect that should be taken care of at all times; nevertheless, and in spite of the previous thing, all the songs fulfill a standard of quality so high that they deserve to be listened, in none of the subjects is frivolous. At one point, while listening to the album my thoughts took me to Justin Bieber, and not because I found similarities between the two singers in terms of their recent productions, but because at some time I thought that the path taken by Shawn Mendes would be the natural path that Justin toured first and it was not like that, the also Canadian Bieber has opted for different styles, where the need (urgency?) for breaking with his past is noticeable; I do not criticize him, this is what happens with artists and each one chooses the path that best suits them. Returning to the disc of Shawn Mendes, the fact that he produces, composes and interprets, adds more credit to him than other artists who only settle for buying songs by other composers. Influences such as Justin Timberlake, Kings of Leon, Kanye West, Daniel Caesar and Pharrell Williams, are heard throughout the album and are a clear proof of the artist's growth. Songs like "Lost in Japan", "Particular Taste" and "Queen", inject freshness and a cosmopolitan aura to the whole album. The sweetness of the voice of Julia Michaels in the song "Like To Be You", speak of the care, affection and seriousness with which Shawn Mendes took in the production of the disc to transmit the emotions in the ideal frame and the perfect voice. All well planned and executed. He is an artist who does not give up and in this 2019 he has released the single: "If I Can not Have You", hopefully it is the prelude to a complete album because after the experience with this album, I can not wait to listen his new material.
The jewel in the crown of this album is definitely "Youth", in which Shawn Mendes shares credit with the brilliant, Khaild. A song full of sensitivity and that transmits desire to continue fighting. No matter how many obstacles are presented in our lives and how difficult it is to overcome them, no matter how long it takes us to break down the walls and overcome the difficulties to achieve our dreams of freedom, while today we wake up in the morning, we will be there giving better of us in this fight against those who discriminate, segregate, offend and despise. That is the message and, at the same time, the challenge that Shawn Mendes throws to the people who listen to this song. Do not give up, keep trying and conquer the top so that this world is getting better, more equal and inclusive. He could not disappoint us and included a song that moves even the most insensitive. He had done it before with issues that motivated women not to allow mistreatment by their partners and now did it again touching a sensitive issue and that moves us all to the bravery and courage to defend freedom and everyone's rights. In addition, the gift that gives us half of the video is extremely encouraging. We can see real heroes who wake up every day to bring light to the world with their scientific struggle, for human rights, for sport, for art and the resilience of those who, for different reasons, have had to deal with very difficult tests. The whole album is appreciated, and it is highly recommended to listen to it from beginning to end.
