"Low Rider"

All my friends know the low rider! Oh wait, you don’t? Well just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 43 years, “Low Rider” is the most prolific song from Latin Jazz & Funk aficionados War, a pillar of seventies psychedelia & a mainstay in your stoner friend’s tape deck since the day they first discovered the song. This track is an internationally famous groove, a supremely laid-back jam which fuses the auxiliary-percussive sounds of Latin Jazz, the steady basslines of Funk music, the free-form factor of Jam bands & the expressionism of Psychedelic Rock, forming a tune so packed with atmosphere & relaxation that you can’t help but tap your foot & start shimmying your shoulders to the beat. It’s been featured in countless television shows – shout out to Eric Foreman calling his girlfriend Donna “the lowrider” in his yearbook in That 70’s Show – & movies over the year, most commonly associated with scenes of Los Angeles or pretty much any shot including a stereotypical Latino from 1980 until…well, today.
Much of this association is due to the song’s subject matter itself, the low rider; It’s a staple of Chicano car culture & a badge worn proudly by those in southern California who like to say that the border crossed them, not the other way around. The lyrics detail the lifestyle of a low rider, from the slow pace at which they drive around – in order to conserve gas in their all-steel cars from the 1950’s – to the way they cruise around neighbourhoods for fun, checking out the local fare as described so poetically blunt in the line “low rider knows every street, yeah.” The laid-back instrumentation & mellow-toned vocals so accurately portray the summertime chill of Los Angeles living that it is absolutely embraced by the Chicanos for whom it celebrates, despite also being utilized as a negatively stereotypical descriptor of Latinos in film for decades now, a beautiful example that inclusion & acknowledgement of anyone’s culture can be powerful enough to erase the negativity towards them in the hearts of America’s diverse citizens.

"Low Rider"

All my friends know the low rider
The low rider is a little higher

The low rider drives a little slower
Low rider, is a real goer

Low rider knows every street, yeah
Low rider, is the one to meet, yeah

Low rider don't use no gas now
The low rider don't drive too fast

Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip and see
Take a little trip, take a little trip
Take a little trip with me
