Production values are at a 10 on “…Ready For It?”, from the first perfectly modified buzz effect. It demands attention, setting a dark and hip stage for Swift to drop some hard edged vocals. Swift has found a man who she wants to spend the night with, and she is game if he is. She sings what her heart — and body – desires; “knew he was a killer first time that I saw him, wondered how many girls he had loved and left haunted, but if he’s a ghost, then I can be a phantom.” In the fantastic video’s vision, a cloak-hooded Swift stalks the night, searching rainy alleyways, relentlessly seeking her sexual prey. She is coming on strong. “Younger than my exes, but he act like such a man, so.” She sounds like she’s looking for some young hot shot. There is a heavy video game vibe coming from the high tech visuals, themed around Assassin’s Creed, with a mix of time periods that swing between fantasy and sci fi, culminating at a mirror like portal.

This Synth Pop get’s really trappy in its beat design, and though the lyrics would suggest a new boyfriend and a romantic rendezvous, the melody doesn’t have an ounce of sweetness or sexiness. It’s actually really aggressive sounding, and without the reading the lyrics, listeners would probably not understand what she is singing, as the sound is so over-loud, drowning out meaning. Another strange thing to point out is the concept. Like, why is she singing about doing bedroom things with a new fling, yet confronting her mirror image in the music video. The two ideas have nothing to do with each other. Watching the video, one gets the sense that she’s aggressively serenading herself. The pre-chorus makes no sense whatsoever; “ I, I, I see how this is gon’ go, touch me and you’ll never be alone, I-Island breeze and lights down low, no one has to know.” The rest of the lyrics don’t make sense either, but the Island breeze line just sticks out like a sore thumb. Not that videos need to be literal translations, but damn.
