Look What You Made Me Do

Listeners familiar with the 90s dance hits will hear quite a bit of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” weaved into the hook of the song. Swift’s phrasing is so similar, as she sings “ooh, look what you made me do, look what you made me do.” The brattiness of her delivery would actually be annoying if it wasn’t for the fact that it is homage to “I’m Too Sexy”, which gives such strange attitude some actual context. Later, Swift dishes her frustrations about all the media accusations about her being in trustworthy, and various feuds with other Artist and celebs throughout her career. The bridge tackles these feelings in a semi coded way, as she sings “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me, I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams.” Basically, she’s saying ‘fuck it.’ You want me to be the bad girl? I’ll be the bad girl then.

At a certain point, with so much money, attention, and power, it becomes extremely frustrating to be at the top. Celebrities are people to, and we should never forget that. Swift doesn’t go for a ‘poor-me’ vibe on this track, and instead revels in the negativity that has dogged her for hears, taking such energy and spinning it into some intense material. She get’s all of her frustration out, while sarcastically remarking on the chorus, “ooh,” and delivering the title line ad nauseum, which is sort of fits the mood, yet it doesn’t make for the greatest of choruses. In fact, it is slightly annoying to repeat a line like this so many times in a song. The creativity is stuck in the mud, and the electropop vibe, sounding like Peaches, is a bit dated no? Let Peaches be Peaches, and Swift move on to a more distinctive sound. Legions of ‘swifites’ will be loyal to any output from their Pop Queen, regardless of how it stacks up.
