The beat of “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” is basically a carbon copy of what has been popping across Pop in the last couple of years, with an emphasis on the romantic vacation quality of tropical house. The aspects that move this track beyond the mediocre are the richness of the guitar elements and the raw rockiness of Mendes’ emotive vocals. His passion is believable, and it’s these elements that allow him to, talent-wise, operate in the same space as Bieber and Puth.

If it weren’t for the weaving in of Rock sounds, this track would risk sounding like too many other up-tempo ballads, full of lyrical promises, but creating an all too familiar melodic pattern. In fact, the folky thumping and clap along spirit, while still in demand, really sounds dated for a track that was released in April 2017, and the answer to that may lie in the fact that it was actually recorded in April 2016. The edge exhibited by Mendes throughout is essentially the saving grace.

In the video scenes, Mendes comes off as a handsome leading man, balancing tour schedule and a love interest at the same time, yet it is all a one in the same experience to him, since he has brought her on the European trip with him. Their love blossoms, they visit all of the beautiful sites, and they become closer and closer, as it becomes apparent that while he sings to his adoring fans in theory, he really is singing to her and her alone in spirit.
