Though Queen have ruled the Rock landscape for damned-near 50 years now, consistently placing in Top 100 charts every week with decades-old material, they’ve received a boom in attention as the Rami Malik-fronted movie Bohemian Rhapsody nears its official release, reigniting the world’s love for this critically acclaimed powerhouse of Rock royalty. One of the many famous songs that is back on everyone’s minds is “We Will Rock You,” likely the most recognizable stadium anthem ever produced as it was specifically designed to promote crowd participation, comprised solely of two boot-stomps & a clap played ad nauseum for the length of the track; As vocalist Freddie Mercury rattles off line after line of intensely-powerful lyrics for each verse, the crowd gets to respond by chanting “we will, we will rock you,” their combined efforts presenting somewhat of a taunt that encourages the listener to get their act together & toughen up as to overcome the adversity & obstacles presented them. Towards the end, guitarist Brian May comes barreling in with his warm-toned solo riff, putting a bit of melody into the mix that not only sounds incredible but resolves the structure of the song, giving it a bright ending that ties everything together rather than simply letting the stomps trail off forever until everyone got tired – When put together, it’s a nearly perfect production, as it allows fans to feel involved in the creation of something bigger than themselves while remembering that they’re here to see a Rock show after all, rewarding them with a powerful solo to cap everything off as if their participation earned it.
Because of this song’s easy composition & ability to rile its listeners up, it’s been used as an end-all-be-all of songs that gets played before any sort of event where you may need to “get in the zone” & prepare to kick some serious ass; From football games to marathons, boxing matches to shotput events, “We Will Rock You” represents the spirit of human perseverance & our will to push through any barrier placed in front of us – Not nearly hitting the same epic scale as the song though is the music video, wherein the members of Queen are sat atop a park bench in the snow, singing along & stomping to the music with Mercury being the only member to really sell the ferocity of his lyrics, everyone else wiggling around like fools in the background & looking rather meek; Furthermore, the audio & visual elements don’t even sync up, no matter what version of the video you happen to find, making the entire performance feel like an awkward karaoke lip-sync event rather than an impressive display of human willpower. It’s definitely not their best effort, but it’s endearing nonetheless, reminding viewers why they love Queen to begin with.
We Will Rock You (often abbreviated as WWRY) is a rock musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton. The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same. Musical instruments and composers are forbidden, and rock music is all but unknown.
