"Wait"

Q. Is this Artist attempting anything unique with this song?
A. Maroon 5 has reached a saturation point with the Pop-ification of their brand; Unless they break out the guitars and attempt an artistic coup, returning to the days of funky grooves & wickedly catchy melodies with intriguing lyrical rhythms, we shouldn’t expect any reinvention of the wheel this time around. Rather than investigating new territory, “Wait” signifies a refinement of 5’s sound evolution which strips away the trendy bells & whistles of their more modern entries in favour of a real connection with the listener – It is relatable, expressive enough to be applied to a wide range of emotional parallels, and catchy enough to stick in your head for days on end. That last factor is the most important, as the quotability of emotionally-charged tunes aligns with the obsessive nature of humans to over-analyze and obsessively ponder the problems in our life, so it stands to reason that a song manufactured around these feelings would have more of an affect on listeners, in turn producing higher retention rates and more views.
Q. Does this track's replay-value come from quality or from celebrity?
A. In this particular situation the replayablitiy of “Wait” can be equally attributed to the quality of its contents as well as the attention-grabbing talents of Maroon 5 & Adam Levine’s names. We’ve come to expect a certain level of polish from the group, whether positively or negatively received by listeners, and this track finds a way to appease both parties by providing the “wow” factor of a new song by your favourite band coupled with the more close-to-the-chest nature of the track’s delivery. The influence of these differing factors means you’ll be finding yourself more attracted to this song than initially thought, leading to an unexpected level of replay-value in contrast to recent mainstream cash-grabs like 2016’s “Don’t Wanna Know,” a song so desperate to fit in to the short-lived Reggae Fusion explosion.
Q. How would you rank the Artist's skill utilization in this track?
A. One could argue that Maroon 5’s skill utilization has been non-existent after the release of their 4th studio album Overexposed (or even half of Hands All Over), as that is the last time the band attempted to display their innate talent for R&B & Funk composition in a way that felt unique & full-bodied. As such, nothing can truly compare to those early tracks, downgrading the difficulty and which follow. “Wait” doesn’t break that mold, delivering a middling performance that reaches popularity through sheer proximity to its creators. Of course, the idea that this song has been refined so well hints that 5 may be coming to their senses, injecting ever-so-slight a taste of what can be achieved when they actually care about the production values applied in their creations.
Q. What aspects of the video are impressive or interesting?
A. Possibly the most entertaining & eye-catching aspect of this music video comes not from the interesting flash-cuts between locales or the disappearing muse between moments, but in the jaw-droppingly simple way the video manage to encapsulate the sensation of someone leaving your life forever. In the final scene, as the main female character finally makes her emotional escape from this tainted relationship, the act of her driving off begins to tug on a bundle of threads, each attached to an object in the house, including Levine himself. The intriguing way in which her distance begins to unravel the very fabric of Levine’s reality is represented in vivid detail, a beautiful display that represents a fitting end to the scenes unveiled only minutes earlier. If nothing else, this effect alone if reason enough to continue watching this music video even after the song has lost its luster.

Lyrics

"Wait"

[Verse 1]
Dirty looks from your mother
Never seen you in a dress that color, no
It's a special occasion
Not invited, but I'm glad I made it, oh

[Pre-Chorus]
Let me apologize
I'll make up, make up, make up, make up for all those times
Your love, I don't wanna lose
I'm beggin', beggin', beggin', beggin', I'm beggin' you

[Chorus]
Wait, can you turn around, can you turn around?
Just wait, can we work this out, can we work this out?
Just wait, can you come here please? 'Cause I wanna be with you
Wait, can you turn around, can you turn around?
Just wait, can we work this out, can we work this out?
Just wait, could you come here please? 'Cause I wanna be with you

[Verse 2]
Can we talk for a moment?
Got these feelings that I'm tired of holdin' on
Wasn't tryna get wasted
I needed more than three or four to say this, oh

[Pre-Chorus]
Let me apologize, yeah
I'll make up, make up, make up, make up for all those times (all those times)
Your love, I don't wanna lose
I'm beggin', beggin', beggin', beggin', I'm begging you

[Bridge]
You say I'm just another bad guy
You say I've done a lot of things I can't undo
Before you tell me for the last time, yeah
I'm beggin', beggin', beggin', beggin', beggin' you
