The 80’s of the past is strong within the pop culture of today thanks to this happy electro funk classic by Ronson, and Mars’ unlimited vocal abilities. High notes and acrobatics aside, most of Mars’ talent here leans towards braggadocio and half-sung phrases, in the vein of a Morris Day verse before the bigger addictive hook. Ronson has borrowed much from the Minneapolis sound, with its heavy-laden synth string backing, plus elements from other 80’s funk bands such as The Gap Band and D-Train. This is definitely a throwback to those days, sonically and visually; yet, there is a certain Pop impediment, which keeps “Uptown Funk” from being quite as funky as groovier b-sides from the actual era. Modern audiences should explore past this exciting sound and discover for themselves the wealth of electro funk to be found in the early 80’s.

Many people may not realize this is Ronson’s track, which has reached such a global phenomenon status, earning 2 Grammys, and generally being one of the highest viewed videos of all time. This is because he gives the singing duties to Mars, and instead takes on the role of bandleader, like Tom Browne does with the mega funky “Funkin’ for Jamaica.” Ronson seems to be a producing genius whatever the genre, but here he showed a real affinity for the material, and proved that this particular sound was what the world really wanted to hear, even if they didn’t know pre-release. Detractors will say that there are aspects in the structure that kill the momentum, such as several four-on-the-floor backed verses where the groove really seems lost and inferior to the sliding and exciting horn chorus parts. Audibly, there are parts of the song that soar much higher than others.

[Verse 1: Bruno Mars]
This hit, that ice cold
Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold
This one, for them hood girls
Them good girls, straight masterpieces
Stylin', wilin'
Livin’ it up in the city
Got Chucks on with Saint Laurent
Gotta kiss myself I’m so pretty

[Pre-Chorus: Bruno Mars]
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Call the police and the fireman
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Say my name you know who I am
I’m too hot (hot damn)
And my band 'bout that money
Break it down

[Chorus: Bruno Mars]
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Cause Uptown funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown funk gon’ give it to you
Saturday night and we in the spot
Don’t believe me, just watch (come on)
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Hey, hey, hey, oh!

[Verse 2: Bruno Mars]
Stop
Wait a minute
Fill my cup put some liquor in it
Take a sip, sign the check
Julio! Get the stretch!
Ride to Harlem, Hollywood, Jackson, Mississippi
If we show up, we gon’ show out
Smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy

[Pre-Chorus: Bruno Mars]
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Call the police and the fireman
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Make a dragon wanna retire man
I’m too hot (hot damn)
Bitch, say my name you know who I am!
I’m too hot (hot damn)
And my band 'bout that money
Break it down

[Chorus: Bruno Mars]
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Girls hit your hallelujah (Woo!)
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Cause Uptown Funk gon’ give it to you
Saturday night and we in the spot
Don’t believe me, just watch (come on)
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Hey, hey, hey, oh!

[Bridge: Bruno Mars]
Before we leave
Lemme tell y’all a lil’ something
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
I said Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Come on, dance
Jump on it
If you sexy then flaunt it
If you freaky then own it
Don’t brag about it, come show me
Come on, dance
Jump on it
If you sexy then flaunt it
Well it’s Saturday night and we in the spot

[Part-Chorus: Bruno Mars]
Don’t believe me, just watch (come on)
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Don’t believe me, just watch
Hey, hey, hey, oh!

[Outro: Bruno Mars]
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up
Uptown Funk you up, Uptown Funk you up (say whaa?!)
Uptown Funk you up
