"One Number Away"

Q. What does this song add – if anything – to the SubGenre it belongs to?
A. Combs continues to take a different stylistic route than most notable and popular country Artists. The fact is; the boy has soul. “One Number Away” is classic country music, but something about the phrasing of the vocals allows this track to crossover into soulful ballad territory. Combs often adds new energy and influences to the SubGenre of Country, and he contributes music that is never a half-measure or a flavor of the week. This is not to say that “One Number Away” is any less country than Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive”. But Combs is an expert at mixing soul, pop, rock and country into one package that is universal. Meaning, even non-country fans should give this a listen.
Q. Which emotion, if any, resonates most with this song & why?
A. Have you ever been in the limbo of post-break-up? Not a particularly terrible break up, but one in which you amicably could not see eye to eye, and thus, were going through the motions of memory. The combination of Combs’ singing talent, and great video editing, capture a particular heartbreak, where hate turns to love in the space of a breath because of a pesky yet pleasant memory. These memories linger, as the truth of the matter reveals itself; yes, your ex-lover is only one number away. The lyrics present some cliché phrases such as “everywhere I go, I see your face”, and the resulting crescendo “I’m still just one number away”, but again, through the talent and emotive voice exhibited by Combs, the interpreted emotion of regret really comes across.
Q. How ahead-of-the-curve is this Artist's track? Or are they late to the game?
A. Combs is that rare breed that brings a certain swag to country music. He allows his vocals to take on R&B worthy riffs, at least on the tail end of major phrases, yet he retains the characteristic drawl indicative of the most traditional of artists in his genre. He is absolutely a contemporary of Chris Stapleton, who has found similar crossover success by partnering with the likes of Justin Timberlake while at the same time staying absolutely true to Outlaw Country roots. Combs is so versatile that he sounds fresh and innovative on this track.

Lyrics

"One Number Away"

[Verse 1]
Are you sitting at home, all alone, trying to fall asleep?
Are you staring a hole through your phone, praying that it rings?
Are you watching a movie that you've seen a thousand times?
Or maybe playing some Mayer, getting lost in your favorite lines

[Pre-Chorus]
Well, if you're anything like me
You just might be doing whatever it takes
To drown out the noise
But I just wanna hear your voice

[Chorus]
And I'm one number away
From calling to you
I said I was through
But I'm dying, inside
Got my head in a mess
Girl, I confess
I lied when I said
"I'm leaving and not coming back"
Might be the whiskey or the midnight rain
But everywhere I go, I see your face
In my brain, dial it up, everything I wanna say
But I'm still one number away

[Verse 1]
Are you stuck at a red light with a Marlboro Light on your lips?
Does the smoke in your mirror get clearer without my kiss?
Are you changing the station replacing our favorite songs?
Well maybe it's a mistake, hit the brakes, I'm moving on

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Well, if you're anything like me
You just might be doing whatever it takes
To outrun the storm
But I'm almost out that door

[Chorus]
And I'm one number away
From calling to you
I said I was through
But I'm dying, inside
Got my head in a mess
Girl, I confess
I lied when I said
"I'm leaving and not coming back"
Might be the whiskey or the midnight rain
But everywhere I go, I see your face
In my brain, dial it up, everything I wanna say
But I'm still one number away

[Bridge]
Will you pick up when I call?
Or just forget we loved at all
We don't have to talk
I just wanna hear your voice

[Chorus]
And I'm one number away
From calling to you
I said I was through
But I'm dying, inside
Got my head in a mess
Girl, I confess
I lied when I said
"I'm leaving and not coming back"
Might be the whiskey or the midnight rain
But everywhere I go, I see your face
In my brain, dial it up, everything I wanna say
But I'm still one number away, away, away
Yeah I'm still one number away
