Calvin Harris returns to his original House roots, and he couldn’t have a more perfect vocal Diva than Dua Lipa, who, while not belting out her lyrics like Cece Peniston, actually kills with sexy subtlety. Simplicity is key here, but more importantly, handled with creative care, simplicity does not need to be boring. Harris, who is a very talented musician, yet may be known more for DJing, is a master of funk and disco, able to update the tropes with new spooky chords and the right choice of future sounds. Everyone he has collaborated with on his newest “Waves” album has shined, and this has to be a testament to his maestro stroke. Lipa, who has collaborated with many disparate styles, always finds a way to stand out vocally, and as a performer, she is captivating. She should be on the top of most people’s Pop lists because she delivers on those conventions, while also advancing the genre. This is House throwback, to be sure, but in it’s revival, it has somehow learned from the past and taken only the best bits.
And then the bridge comes. Remember when R&B had bridges? Mind you, actual House music didn’t even have bridges, so this is an extra surprise for old House heads and new Pop-R&B fans. This low rising of romance begins at a quiet moment around the 2:37 mark, carried higher and higher by very metallic strings, with Dipa’s low voice crooning, “see a wonderland in your eyes, might need your company tonight.” Chills! Dipa stretches the vowels of each word, playing on the scale with the syllables, making the short 2 sentence phrase into something as special as the underlying melody. Then the pre-chorus has her singing in an aching way, “something in you lit up heaven in me, the feeling won’t let me sleep, ‘cause I’m lost in the way you move, the way you feel.” The chorus takes us home with her. We are in love.
