Ariana Grande is back baby, her signature blend of high-flying Diva antics & Electro Soul melodies gently fusing together, a headstrong composition which is both effortlessly cool & reassuringly strong in the wake of 2017’s Manchester bombing; For a while there it seemed like Grande would be absent from the scene for much longer, barely able to keep it together at any of her later live performances, so this release holds much more weight than would normally be the case, an affirmation that her talent isn’t going to waste as well as a tangible sign of mental maturity. “No Tears Left To Cry” is one of her most positive releases to date, a glorious romp that plays with the idea of leaving everything behind, dropping any perceived hatred or dramatics in favour of perpetually good vibes; As she states in the lyric “right now, I’m in a state of mind I wanna be in, like, all the time,” Grande has reached a point of personal growth where she’s finally happy with what she has, focused on nurturing this new sensation instead of letting negativity rule her life, a fate common among Artists of her caliber. Though a widely repeated notion, it feels more earnest & meaningful coming from a woman who recently underwent very public trauma, wherein becoming the target of a terrorist attack ranks innumerably high on the give-a-fuck-o-meter in comparison to, say, Taylor Swift’s haters in “Shake It Off.”
Sonically speaking, there are no songs in the current Dance Pop or Alternative R&B circles which sound as forward thinking as “No Tears…,” mainstream or otherwise. Comprised of numerous synth-heavy elements, expressively bright chord structures & a flowing melodic lyricism that showcases Grande’s superb range, this track is far ahead of the game. While other Popstars are focused on adapting the trendy characteristics of Trap & Future Bass in their work, audiences are instead given a glimpse of the next wave of Pop music here, symphonically emotive & utilizing electronic instrumentation in more inventive & impactful ways. Regardless of your feelings towards Little Red & her pipes, one thing’s for certain – The next few releases from her are going to shake the Pop industry to its core.
