Entering the music scene with your first project and it blowing up is truly a gift and a curse. No-one makes music so that it can be overlooked, so having as many eyes on it as possible so early on is obviously a blessing, but it also throws you into the deep end while you’re inexperienced and may not be ready for it all yet. PARTYNEXTDOOR was just a couple of days out from turning twenty-years-old when he put out his self-titled debut EP under OVO Sound in the summer of 2013. For many, it became the soundtrack of that summer, with “Wus Good / Curious” in particular blowing up. I remember people from school who generally weren’t so attached to the music scene and heard things once they became bigger radio songs singing this song and that’s when I knew PND was one to watch. Later on in the same year, PARTY made some light contributions to Drake’s third album, Nothing Was The Same, with vocals on “Own It” and bonus track “Come Thru”. The year was proving to be a big one for him, the breakout first few months you dream of. About twelve months after the release of PARTYNEXTDOOR, while people still had his first body of work in rotation, the singer announced the sequel for a July 2014 release but this time, it was going to be a full length album. It was time to see if he was for real or not.
