A long album with a lot of experimentations

The British folk rock band Mumford & Sons released their fourth studio album Delta in November 2018, three years after they came up with their previous album Wilder Mind in 2015. The album has a total number of fourteen tracks and an overall time length of approximately sixty two minutes. Mumford & Sons is usually known for combining folk music using banjo and acoustic guitars with heavier alternative rock. In this album, they have gone out of their distinct energetic sound to some extent and experimented with more slow jazz, rap and electronic music elements, and little use of banjo and acoustic guitars unlike their previous albums. Because of this, the album received mixed reviews from various music critics and listeners. While Rolling Stone and The Guardian rated the album only 2 out of 5 stars, The Telegraph rated it 5 out of 5 stars, Paste rated it 8.5 out of 10 and Entertainment Weekly rated it 8.3. It received an average overall rating of 59 out of 100 on Metacritic. Pitchfork, NME and AllMusic provided average ratings as well. Despite of experimenting with new sounds, the highly mixed reviews suggest that some listeners and critics have fully liked the album whereas the others did not. Many hardcore fans of Mumford & Sons complained that the album overall lacked their usual energetic and rousing music style, and that they have tried to go mainstream instead of working on their unique sound that defined their identity. However, one of the pre-released singles that was included in the album Guiding Light received mostly positive responses because of its usual energetic folk rock genre. On the other hand, Pitchfork said that this album has the strongest collection of their songs they released to date, because the “cool-handed atmospherics” and “dreamy melodies” suited them the best. Despite of all the debate, the album was a commercial success and it was featured in several music charts in various countries across North America, Europe and Australia. It had reached the top spot in the weekly album charts in Canada, Netherlands, Sweden and The United States, even debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album, furthermore, received Gold certification from trade organisations like Music Canada and BPI.
