A Change Of Pace Takes Marshmello From Gimmick To Greatness On Joytime II
For what seems like an eternity now – okay, like, two years – I’ve been talkin’ mad trash about electronic powerhouse Marshmello, doing everything in my power to take him down a peg & refusing to debate with the sad saps who seriously tried telling me he was better than older DJs like Carl Cox & Frankie Knuckles. His following seemed unrightfully ravenous seeing as all of his songs sounded exactly the same, implementing a fairly generic Future Bass sound, oftentimes completely inconsistent sound mixing & a complete misunderstanding for how narrative melodicism should take place in a track, but fans ate him up nonetheless – Naturally, no one was brave enough to take my side on the hate train, but when Joytime II came out I found myself praising Marshmello more than I ever thought I would, amazed by the fact he had – for the first time – produced something I thought was 100% spot-on for his specific style.
