Good to have Cube back and harder than ever, yet is this classic/modern hybrid a hit or miss?
Ice Cube should be applauded for being an original with an early body of work that stands tall today, while also being one of the most successful examples of a Gangsta CEO – with decades of creative output extracurricular to rap music and untethered to the street persona. People get it twisted though, thinking that the beast of a rapper somehow has nothing more to say, but they would be incorrect, as hard hitting album Everythangs Corrupt sonically proves. It’s brash, bombastic, and laced with multi- styled instrumentals, while Cube unleashes his old school, commanding flow, which will remind fans of the way West Coast and even East Coast deliveries all fought to be heard – and what’s more, fought to be understood, with no swallowing of words or context allowed. To this, I must admit that the delivery is a little bit off – not on every track, but in a general way; something to do with the timing not syncing up on certain verses, or the emphasis sounding too old school and on-the-nose for a mainstream atmosphere that has moved far beyond this style.
