The year was 2014; I can't remember the exact month it was, I was about to embark on a trip back to school, which was approximately an eight hours drive. Unfortunately, I woke up pretty late that day, stormed in and out of the bathroom, dressed up and rushed out so as to catch up with my bus as I had already booked a bus ticket few days earlier. Finally got to the park only to be told that the bus had left almost an hour ago. I was so devastated, I didn’t t know what to do, I just stood transfixed to the ground for a couple of minutes, speechless. I asked for a refund but the manager told me that they don't do that and he showed me where it was written just at the back of the ticket I was holding. He must have noticed how sad I was at the realization of the fact that I won't be able to make the trip again, I was even more sad because the next day was the deadline for a school project assigned to me. I was brought out of my sad-subconscious state by the voice of the manager when I heard him talking to someone on the phone. For a moment, I thought it was the driver he was calling, maybe he could just tell him to wait while I catch up with them but I was wrong. He dropped the call and looked at me with his face full of smiles, told me about someone he knows that wants to make a trip to the city I was traveling to. I let go of a very deep breath I didn’t even know I was holding inside. Few minutes afterwards, the said person came and alas it was a fellow student of mine who was also in my department but we didn’t really talk at that time. She was also surprised to see me but did better in covering up her surprise than I did. We embarked on our long trip together and it started off awkward, as we didn't say a word to each other at first after we had exchanged greetings. We had not gone far when she connected her mobile phone to her car stereo through Bluetooth and then comes Ed Sheeran's voice playing out of the stereo speakers, the first song she played was "Thinking Out Loud". A song that had been making waves in this part of the world at that time but that was the first time the song really hit me, I paid attention to the lyrics, the beat, and then Ed Sheeran's voice, it was heavenly. All through this trip, all we listened to was the album which I later found out was titled X, pronounced Multiply. The next day after I got to school, I immediately went to get the album and it became my favourite album at that time. All the songs in this album are exceptionally great and a perfect example of the niche which the artiste had created for himself over the years, set between love and heartbreak.
Edward Christopher Sheeran is definitely one of Britain's biggest exports to the world. He and Adele have been the ones keeping Britain at the top of the musical league. No one could say for certain the exact moment Sheeran got himself into the top league as he started his singing career at a very young age, and he simultaneously grew graciously both in age and music. Although it took him couple of EPs being released before he finally struck gold when he got signed by Asylum Records after which he immediately released his debut studio album, + pronounced as "Plus". "The A Team", a track off the album earned him two Grammy nominations in 2013. This album catalyzed Ed's career and turned him from being a young British hot prospect to a world star as the album peaked at number five on the US billboard 200 and in the early weeks, sold over 42 thousand copies and 102 thousand copies in the UK and US respectively. + was regarded as the ninth best-selling album of the decade in the United Kingdom. The album ended up being certified 8x platinum in the UK and 2x Platinum in US, selling the total of 2.4 million copies in United Kingdom and 1.2 million copies in United States, totaling its world sale to 4 million copies. Not a bad first impression, huh? This was Sheeran’s first official statement to the world, and it left us wanting to know more about this young man who was barely 20 years old at this time. Like fine wine, Ed Sheeran kept on getting even better with every track, every album. Speaking of album, after enjoying the success from the + album for 3 years, he finally backed it up with another album which in similar manner, named ×, pronounced as "Multiply". It peaked at number one in both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200 and this was a further endeavour by Sheeran to make a point that he was no fluke or one album wonder. The album was headlined with a track titled "Thinking Out Loud" which would later be regarded as one of the biggest songs in 2014. It reached number one in the UK, and it also spent eight weeks or thereabout at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. It ended up being nominated for Album of the year in the 57th edition of the Grammy awards which he missed out on but "Thinking Out Loud" made up for it by winning him Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in the Grammy awards ceremony. X was named the second best-selling album worldwide in 2015, only topped by Adele's 25 and knowing very well how great 25 was and how much it sold, one would realize that X is indeed a very commercially successful album, considering the fact that it was just his second studio album. After this massive accomplishment, he took another long break from music making and left us craving for more of his exquisite style of songs. 2 years down the line, he came back with a new album, similar to the previous ones, this one too was named after a mathematical sign, this time around, he named it ÷ pronounced as divide. The album was released on the 3rd of March in 2017, which was one of the darkest years of my life. I was at my lowest, when Ed released this album and I somehow knew this album would heal me. As expected of Ed Sheeran, due to the standard his previous albums had set, the album debuted at number one in the UK, the US, Germany and other countries, recording a first week sales of 672,000 copies. It was regarded as the fastest selling album by a male solo artist in the UK, and third fastest in UK chart history. It also held the record for the biggest first week sales of 2017 in the US, until it was surpassed by Taylor Swift’s album Reputation.
At the end of 2015, more precisely December 13th 2015, Ed Sheeran had announced his self-imposed hiatus from music world. He had realized he needed a break since, as he said, he found himself seeing the world through the screen and not his eyes. Also, he mentioned this break will serve him as an opportunity to create his third studio album. A year later, he posted a sign on his social medias (a photo with square) as an announcement he is getting back in music world. Ed Sheeran said this album – Divide is the best thing he made so far. On January 1st 2016, he officially ended his hiatus and said new music is coming soon, more precisely on January 6th, five days after. That day, he published “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You” while other singles were published later, in March, when the album was released.
When I met Ed Sheeran with his debut album, "+", I convinced myself that it would be the Golden Boy that the British had been looking forward to for years. I was not wrong, the success of that first album was probably unexpected for him. Everyone wondered who that boy was who masterfully sensitized issues that could reach the hearts of people of any age and culture. A guitar and an effects processor to sequence the accompaniment of their songs and, above all, lyrics. Yes lyrics, things to say, stories to tell. And well, anyone can tell me that almost all popular songs contain lyrics, but come on, what they say! In contrast, Ed Sheeran was willing to conquer the hearts of music lovers through all his senses and not resorting to the simple formula of a contagious rhythm, an inconsequential letter, everything in the blender and voila! We have a success. No, the commitment of the one born in London in 1991 with the name of Edward Christopher Sheeran was, rather than with anything else, with himself. Faithful to his style, but, above all, true to his convictions, we come to the moment of "÷". An album that shows us the maturity of a determined musician not to betray his essence but convinced that he has to move forward in the same line so as not to stagnate and end up in oblivion. Artists like him, rarely appear, so we must take advantage of every last drop of creativity that comes from his songs and, above all, enrich our taste for reading and poetry with his lyrics. Ed Sheeran does not disappoint us and each of his creations has a valuable contribution either for a deep thought or to create a beautiful image in our mind. He also tells us painful things and situations that many of us have experienced. A complete and universal artist: Ed Sheeran.
Ed Sheeran is mostly known for his beautiful vocals, heart wrenching lyrics, and mathematical album titles. But he has released another album titled Divide. The first single, “Shape of You,” which is an electro pop tune, was released alongside the second single, “Castle on the Hill,” which is the Ed Sheehan-Esque guitar driven song. The album offers many different sounds and tempos but also surround his vocals and beautiful lyrics. From the very first song where he incorporates rapping all the way to the twelfth song on the track list that is sure to make everyone sob. Ed’s third album is sure to make an impression on anyone. It features many love song songs and a few heartbreak songs as well, and they’re all (mostly) about his own ex-girlfriend and his feelings towards her. Despite that, the album has a wickedly good love song, that may or may not be better than the oh so popular “Thinking Out Loud.”
