21 Savage grows up just in time to save Hip Hop
After exponential growth in a very short period of time, 21 Savage can now be further assessed – not just as a mere street personality with a characteristically bleak deadpan, but rather a mature artist interested in concepts more varied than the limited sound he helped foster. Mumble rap, the pejorative descriptor for the most popular of Atlanta / Florida Rap styles, and co-opted by multiple regions today, must logically run its course. There have already been signs from Kodak Black and even Lil Pump that their continued relevance necessitates evolution, and for 21 Savage, this notion is ever present on his surprisingly sophisticated second album, i am > i was.
