Zedd was already hugely popular in the Philippines when he released his second studio album, True Colors. Due to his big worldwide hits “Clarity” (featuring The Foxes) and “Stay the Night” (featuring Hayley Williams) from his first album and I Want You to Know (featuring Selena Gomez) from this album, he became one of the most recognized and most sought after EDM artists. Zedd is aIso a regular visitor to Manila, having performed here three times already, ever since his breakout. That he was there with us performing live, since the beginning of his success, has really endeared him to his fans. He first performed here in December 2013 for his Clarity Tour, then he supported this album with the True Colors Tour in August 2015 to a sellout crowd of 12,000 people, me included. Finally, he came here last year not only to perform in the arena but also to have a more intimate club show. Artistically though, I did not know that Zedd was the type of EDM artist who would release songs because he had a new album. I’ve always thought of him as a singles artist. Anyway, in the EDM world, I don’t think there is too much pressure for the artist to release a full studio album since they constantly collaborate with guest vocalists – famous or infamous – and logic dictates that if that song sounds really good, there is no use in waiting for the artist to finish a full album and instead just release the song. I believe EDM artists have that leeway of freedom which a bigger vocalist of let’s say, Ariana Grande’s stature, would not have. Nowadays as well, artists of different genres are openly collaborating with EDM artists to produce some really unique songs – and these artists can run the gamut of genres – from R&B, pop, urban, rap, or maybe even country – making it an exciting time for dance music. There are no more boundaries in terms of collaborating with EDM artists. Zedd though leans more towards female vocalists for his songs although he has more male vocalists in this album. Interestingly, his collaborations with the women are more notably famous. Also, although Zedd is a trained musician, having the ability to play multiple instruments, he relies heavily on his synth to produce the gravitas that should be present in every good dance single.
