It was the year 2011 and I just resumed for my final session at the university. I got an apartment off campus in a place where we called student villa. The villa had 20 apartments, 5 on each opposite block. As the introvert that I was then, I would always do my things away from everyone. I barely had an encounter with any of the other students in the hostel. As a result of the number of apartments, there were numerous occupants, each with his/her own attitude, lifestyle and taste in music. None of which bothered me, not forgetting to state the fact that most of them lived a high-volume-music blaring lifestyle, worst of all was their taste in music. Whenever most of them were playing a song, I'd be in my room cringing and covering my ears with the pillow, but there was this particular girl that stayed directly opposite my room. The songs she listened to felt different, especially one very album she played it early in the morning, as early as 5am. I didn't know whose album it was but she sounded nothing like the regular female artiste. She was a hybrid of R&B and Hip-Hop. One morning, a particular song from the album got my adrenaline so triggered and I couldn't take it anymore, I left my room with the aim of approaching her room to ask for the artiste's name, thankfully I found her outside doing her laundry. I got to ask her and she told me the artiste's name is Nicki Minaj, she even offered to lend me the album which I gladly accepted, I went back into my room, inserted the disc and listened to the album at a very hushed tone at first, then gradually, I turned up the volume until it became so loud; Nicki Minaj made me do what I hated most of my neighbors for, and I was not even sorry about it. The album and Nicki Minaj as an artiste became an addiction for me like they were to the girl that introduced me to her music. It was indeed a sweet addiction. Nicki Minaj is definitely one of the best gifts that the year 2010 brought for us all, along came a her debut album, Pink Friday. Onika Tanya Marají whose moniker is Nicki Minaj, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, whose parents happened to be Gospel singers, which explained where she must have gotten her singing abilities from, but it doesn’t explain her Rap prowess. I'll say that's divine. She made me love rap music in a different way because she did rap music in a different way. The album was released November 22, 2010 and it featured some top heavyweights like Eminem, Rihanna, Drake, Kanye West and Will.I.Am. Pink Friday debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, finding its way to number 1 on the chart. Having a first week sales of 375,000 copies, it's safe to say Pink Friday can be regarded as a successful project, also putting into consideration that it is her first debut studio album. The album had a total sale of Two million traditional copies in the United States as at February 2018, the Recording Industry Association of America later certified it Triple Platinum. Pink Friday was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 54th edition of the Grammy Awards that took place in 2012. "Moment 4 life", one of the biggest songs off the album also got nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance in the Grammy Awards as well.
