My relationship with the band Maroon 5 has been a mixture of love and hate, depending on the album they just released. There were some great songs from their last album, Red Pill Blues, “Best 4 You” and “What Lovers Do” – a great collaboration with SZA, so I very much wanted to see their last tour. Unfortunately, the tickets were quickly sold out here in Manila and to make matters worse, they were very expensive too, so the tickets that were left cost around US$350 each which I think was not worth it, since I had seen the band three times already and I wasn’t willing to cough out that much money for a band I’ve already seen. They don’t dance anyway, they just sing onstage, so I just decided to catch them on their next album tour. Anyway, lately, the band has been pandering to what they think their fans would like to hear and their music has moved towards a more pop-urban sound which is very popular today. I guess if that’s what the band has to do to stay relevant then it’s ok. However, for a fan like me who has been with the band since 2002, I wish they would release an album that is a bit more rock in sound since that’s where they started. Among all their albums, Songs About Jane is still my most favorite and probably the most ‘authentic’ Maroon 5 sound for me. Of course, the band alone can decide on what sound is ‘authentic’ for them but that is my two cents. I think with their resurgent popularity, they can ‘experiment’ and try to revive that pure and original Maroon 5 sound. That is my wishful thinking.
