Drake’s VIEWS Falls Victim To The Circumstances But Still Comes Out Swinging

Over the years, Drake has had some interesting habits when it comes to putting out his music. One of those has been has infatuation with “scary hours”. He has an EP of the same name consisting of “God’s Plan” and “Diplomatic Immunity” but before that, it was a phrase that he used almost as a warning of what was to come. On a couple of occasions, he tweeted it and released new music in the hours of the night when most of North America was fast asleep, an extraordinary method for a megastar. The thing about these Scary Hours drops is that while they’re in the middle of the night for America, over here in the UK where I live, they drop at a respectable hour in the morning. On a particular occasion, I was in school and when I should have been studying, I was on my phone and saw that Drake had just released a song called “Days In The East” on SoundCloud. I sneaked in a pair of headphones and listened. I loved it, but what was intriguing to me was the cover art that went along with it. It was all black except for the red 6 in the bottom right corner. I’m not entirely sure what conclusion I came to about its meaning at the time, but I’m certain that I did not predict how colossal it ended up becoming. The 6 of course became a nickname for Drake’s city of Toronto, an abbreviation of its area code. But more than that, it was the beginning of a cultural shift that culminated with the release of VIEWS, originally titled Views From The 6.
