Dean Lewis, the thirty-one year old Australian singer songwriter released his debut album A Place We Knew recently in March 2019. Though he had released few singles and an EP before, A Place We Knew is his first full length album. Few tracks like “Waves” and “Be Alright” which already had gained immense popularity when they were released as singles, have also been included in the album. Lewis revealed that all the songs he wrote are based on his life, relationships, home and hotel rooms where he lived in. The heartfelt and brokenhearted lyrics have proved to be an advantage, as many listeners, mostly teenagers, are able to relate them with their own life stories. Musically, a lot of Ed Sheeran and Sheppard influences have been observed in many of the tracks. The album received decent ratings from various music critics. While Who Magazine rated the album 5 out of 5 stars, Herald Sun provided an average rating of 3.5 stars. According to The Saturday Paper, the album speaks of life and broken relationships that many people can relate to, however, there is a lack of depth and insight. The commercial success was expected as pre-released tracks like “Waves” and “Be Alright” already became popular. The debut pop music album with fairly-matured voice, realistic songwriting and sad acoustic tunes – all these ingredients that are necessary for any music to be commercially successful these days are present in the album that have made it popular among many pop and indie music listeners.
