Chris Stapleton’s voice is akin to love at first sight, where you just know, he’s the one. The Kentuckian’s debut album, 2015’s Traveller, is a milestone for the genre, encapsulating everything that I imagine good Country to be – rootsy, authentic, and a bridge to several other styles, be them Blues or R&B. The tracks here are revivalist in nature, within every note and vocal belt, showing that if it ain’t broke, don’t you dare fix it. The real treat ends up being the fact that these are all brand new originals recorded in the old way – a way that even a Country novice like myself recognizes instantly as the best way – when all music was great and had something deeper to say. I am not an outlaw, but I sure feel like one, going on a twisting southern gothic trip, throwing back whiskey with this biker looking dude and feeling what he feels. Music such as this makes you really want to be a traveller.
