“Soundcloud rap” has become a common term in Hip-Hop, often used to marginalize the sound of music coming from this free platform, and others alike. Then there’s Chancellor Bennett, or otherwise known as Chance The Rapper, who released his mixtape Acid Rap in April of 2013 on this streaming platform and DatPiff, quickly reworking the term in his favor. Initial reviews heralded the project as head-turning for its bundled presentation of Chicago’s famous musical styles and showing a semblance of youthfulness in an era run by blogs. Even more impressive, the mixtape did well digitally as it ranked high alongside the chart-smashing albums of 2013, from artists like Kanye West, Jay-Z, and J. Cole, to name a few. Now here is this 20-year-old kid, foregoing higher education for ‘higher’ learning, in the form of acid and LSD tabs. The outcome? A mixtape with timeless music that eventually catapulted this independent artist to superstar status over the course of 5 years. But how’d it all come together?
