Electronic pop or country pop? Sad or happy music? Fast or slow? These are just some of the contrasts that you and I can experience in Bebe Rexha’s music in her album Expectations. If I were to give it a title though, I would call this album “crisis”.
The many songs in this album Expectations is not so much about expectations. It is more about crisis. A crisis in many forms that Bebe Rexha was able to write into songs that have the sound of electronic, pop, and even country. It goes fast and it goes slow. The artistry is unique and that’s where she stands out in the music industry. This album proves she’s an experienced songwriter. With the hit she wrote for Eminem and Rihanna, “The Monster”, she’s indeed teased listeners in that piece that she’s out to take over the industry. And she has already. In this album, she puts listeners in a variety of crisis experiences that a lot, if not all, of us have at some point experienced. Why is it worth the writing about this album? Put it simply, Bebe Rexha sings about the brokenness of our world, the real struggles only in a less serious manner unlike the way Pink would sing it. That crisis is real in every person and in this album, she gets us into it in three ways.
Did y’all know that Bebe Rexha had been a musical entity for several years before you heard her wailing, “If it’s meant to be it’ll be, it’ll be, just let it be,” along with Florida Georgia Line? I didn’t. I thought that the cute blonde with the kickass voice was a new country artist. The first time I heard “Meant to Be” on the radio I was in the car on my way somewhere, didn’t know a word of the song but I was still singing that chorus at the top of my lungs by the end of the 2nd verse. I loved it. There’s just nothing like a summer evening, driving with the windows down and singing along with a song that you can feel way down in your soul. Of course, once I got home and looked it up I figured I would love to hear more of her music. I could not believe the difference between her solo music and the collaboration with Florida Georgia Line. Seriously, this lady could be the next Miranda Lambert of the country world and I’d be a huge fan. When it comes to the other music on her album Expectations I’m not so excited, mainly because I’m not a pop fan. I typically find pop music to be lightweight and fluffy without much meaning. Sure, you can dance to it, but is it what you need to hear when you’re in the bottom of the bottle and miserable? Probably not. There’s no denying she has a voice and can sing virtually anything and make it sound good. I’m just not a fan of the style she’s actually made her name in. The album is a collection of good songs, and appearances from musicians from different styles of music including Florida Georgia Line, Quavo, and Tory Lanez. While I may not like the genre of music that Bebe is considered to be, I appreciate her talent and her voice, as well as her versatility. Since being signed by Warner Brothers in 2013 she has made a name for herself in the music world. She’s got a ton of songwriting credits including songs with The Jonas Brothers, Rihanna, and Eminem, collaborations with various artists and a slew of nominations and awards.
In her account of more than eight million followers on the social network Instagram, the singer Bebe Rexha writes this on her profile: "rock star, not a pop star" and I guess many will agree with her while others flatly deny it. And it is not easy for many to listen to songs like "Shining Star" "Mine" or "Meant to Be" and to give the reason to the artist. Although if you listen to "Ferrari" or "I'm a Mess" you will totally agree with her. The singer also says the same in her Twitter profile with more than one million three hundred thousand followers, and on Facebook with almost two and a half million fans, and yet I believe that even among her most loyal followers, there will be those who contradict themselves and think: Bebe Rexha is a versatile rock star, and others who say that the artist is a pop star who plays strong themes. Some have called her the bad girl of pop and I do not know if that makes Bebe Rexha happy, but since labels are in fashion all over the world, I think that she will not be able to escape from some people calling her in a way and other people call her from other. Maybe it would be easier to not pay attention to those labels and continue creating music without anything else matters anyway, to add more elements to the debate, my opinion is that, in short, this unique American singer is a rock star. Why? Because taking the rock in the veins is demonstrated with the attitude and not necessarily with the musical styles with which you explore in your records. There are thousands of examples about true idols in different genres that experiment all the time with other styles to refresh their career and offer their followers different facets to be even more appreciated and that does not mean that they abandon the essence of the genre that gives meaning to their careers and in where they have grown. Another thing where I think some people are confused about not knowing where the place that Bebe Rexha should be is her look. Normally the care for the appearance and the use of fashionable clothes, with a wide variety of colors and styles, adding glamor and much makeup to everything that she presents in her videos and presentations, is more related to the world of pop music. It is something much more vain, narcissistic and commercial, it is part of the marketing of pop today. And on more than one occasion we see the singer installed in that way, that's also why confusion can exist. While in the rock world, we are more accustomed to leather clothing and less show the body, causing audiences to focus more on the songs and the rude and aggressive style of its performers, without the appearance of much matter. But for me, and apparently for Bebe Rexha too, the feminine beauty, the taste for variety in the costumes that make you look better, and a good rock melody are not fought. I think we are living in a moment in which it is right that we should shake off all those stereotypes and concentrate more on having fun and appreciating the beauty of each artistic expression without so many ties.
American singer Bleta "Bebe" Rexha released her debut album named "Expectations" on June 22nd, 2018. Her massive success with song made in collaboration with country duo Florida Georgia Line called "Meant to Be" led to releasing her first album and the peak of her musical career. "I put so much blood, sweat and tears into it," she says. "I was always scared to release an album because I wanted it to be so great and I’m such a perfectionist. It was the first piece of work I put out that I was super proud of." The album gained huge popularity all over the world and Bebe Rexha said she felt that all in music world is about contrast. She wanted to combine everything she has ever done, from songs like "Me, Myself & I" made in collaboration with G-Eazy to song like "Meant to Be" and yet include something like No Doubt and Lauryn Hill. She said: " I was like, 'How do I put it in an album?' I think it just happened naturally.” This album seems to be another proof that everything that happens naturally is something incredible. Expectations went out for pre-order on April 13th, 2018, with the release of two promotional singles: "Ferrari" and "2 Souls on Fire.”
I remember listening to Bebe Rexha in my Sophomore year and singing “I’m Going to Show You” Like I was some sort of baddie while I didn’t go out anywhere and was living with my conservative grandparents. However, I didn’t realize she had released so much music until last summer when my Nana asked who she was because she saw her on tv. To my surprise, she released her debut album after dropping a few EPs. Expectations is the home to fourteen tracks and only two of them are previously released on an EP. It follows a theme of life, but more particularly, the ups and downs of life. It talks about how unexpected life is with the ups and downs.
