FREE 6LACK

I have heard one song by the person I will always ironically call 6-lack even though I know that it is wrong. I stumbled upon “PRBLMS” somehow about a year ago, and it never occurred to me to listen to anything more by him at all until now. So, I did just that. I listened to his album FREE 6LACK for the first time and I have to be honest, I was not disappointed. It is overall a pretty chill album that I probably won’t be listening to on repeat, but it is still good.

Every year, when the Grammy Awards release their nominees, I pore through the list and check out each of the categories for artists who I am not familiar with. I am usually interested in the categories instead of the major awards – where they usually nominate the more famous ones. In the individual categories, they usually nominate acts which are not really your usual chart toppers. I have been rewarded every year for this habit of mine as it has introduced me to a host of very talented acts. In 2018, while checking out that year’s nominees, I chanced upon the name of singer-songwriter and rapper 6LACK. His album was up for the Grammy Best Urban Contemporary Album while the song “PRBLMS” was up for Grammy Best Rap Performance. I have never heard of him before and he doesn’t usually appear too much in rap or hiphop news. I immediately got myself a copy of his album and soon enough, I got hooked with the vibe he wants to create for his album and some of the songs in the album are in my daily playlist. I was very happy I did because some of his songs connected with me and I was glad to discover another artist which I wouldn’t have known without the help of the Grammy voters.
